Hands-On with the Polaroid Flip: Instant Nostalgia Meets Modern Magic

The other day, I made my way to Walkens House of Film to test out the highly anticipated Polaroid Flip—Polaroid’s latest leap into the world of instant photography. With local photographer <a href="

First impressions? It’s a head-turner. The Flip features a design-forward, compact body complete with a flippable lid for lens protection, a tactile red shutter button, and a vibe that screams “wear me.” (Yes—it even comes with a neck strap, so you can rock it as an accessory at your next event.)

Big Features, Small Package

Priced at $399, the Polaroid Flip is more affordable than hiring a photo booth—and way more fun. It’s designed to be accessible to all skill levels, from complete beginners to seasoned shooters, with features that bring both ease and creativity to the table. I do want to make a note that although the camera is affordable…the film is still very pricey. To take 8 pictures it will cost you around $32.

Let’s break down what makes it shine:

  • Hyperfocal 4-Lens System: Automatically adjusts to your subject’s distance for ultra-sharp shots, whether you’re snapping a portrait or grabbing candid street scenes.
  • Sonar Autofocus: A revamped classic that uses sound waves to lock in focus—even in low light.
  • Scene Analysis & LED Interface: If your shot’s over or underexposed, the camera gently lets you know, via the viewfinder LED or lid display.
  • The Strongest Polaroid Flash Yet: Adaptive and powerful, it lights up scenes up to 4.5 metres away.
  • Double Exposure Mode: Perfect for creating those dreamy, layered “artsy” shots everyone loves.
  • Timer Mode: Great for group photos—set it up, jump in, and smile.
  • USB-C Charging and support for Polaroid i-Type and 600 film for extra convenience.

What truly sets the Flip apart, though, is how it embraces imperfection. It’s not about chasing digital perfection—it’s about capturing real, raw moments that you can hold in your hand.

Analog Meets App

While the Flip is proudly analog at heart, it connects via Bluetooth to the Polaroid App, opening up a world of digital tools. You can scan prints, share them instantly on Instagram, or even use your phone to take a photo remotely.

That said, there’s a catch. Unlike Apple’s slick pairing of the Apple Watch with the iPhone camera (which lets you preview your shot), the Flip lacks a live view from the app. If you’re not looking directly through the viewfinder, you’re shooting blind. But maybe that’s part of the charm—embracing the surprise, the unexpected, the unedited.

The Verdict

The Polaroid Flip isn’t just a camera. It’s an experience. It encourages you to slow down, frame deliberately, and print moments that matter—moments that won’t get lost in your phone’s photo dump. Whether you’re capturing party memories or creating something more experimental, the Flip delivers a beautifully tactile reminder of how fun and freeing photography can be.

The Flip is in stores—JB Hi-Fi, Myer, and Walkens House of Film—now! If you’re looking for a creative companion that’s equal parts nostalgic and forward-thinking, it’s time to get your hands on one.
